03 - Top 5 renovation lessons as a designer

The quick list

  1. Do it or don't, but you need to decide

  2. Align expectations with feasibility

  3. Great projects need constraints

  4. Quality in quality out

  5. Trust your team

In my 20 years of designing private home renovations, I've encountered recurring themes that have surprised me. When I embarked on this journey to offer creative services, I didn't anticipate these insights.

Lesson 1: Do it or don't, but you need to decide.

Renovations are inherently challenging, often testing your conviction. Costs may exceed expectations, timelines may stretch, and disruptions can occur. Having unwavering commitment and conviction in the face of new challenges is vital. Before you start, consider your alternatives. Could selling and moving be a better option than renovating? Can you adjust the scope to unlock new value? Avoid being pressured by external factors like family or societal influences. You always have a choice. Embracing this initial decision will make subsequent ones more manageable.

Lesson 2: Aligning Expectations with Feasibility.

Aligning your project with your budget is crucial but not the only challenge. You must also align your project's purpose with your needs and goals. Honesty plays a central role. Don't be tempted to believe that you can solve everything with more money. Begin by aligning your inspirations with your reality. Do your chosen images match your space's proportions? If your inspirations include features you can't incorporate due to budget constraints, make tough but informed decisions.

Lesson 3: Great Projects Need Constraints.

Constraints are essential for defining the project's scope and measuring success. Whether it's budget, time, or physical space, constraints provide direction. Every project has constraints, and they play a pivotal role in guiding decisions. Even in projects with abundant resources, setting constraints can drive excellence. For instance, prioritizing assembling the best team of professionals can be a constraint, with success measured through awards or recognition.

Quirky features resulting from some constraint are often what made my projects stand out.

Lesson 4: Quality in, Quality Out.

Quality begins with thoughtful consideration of your renovation project. Clearly define your desires, expectations, and communicate them effectively with your team. A project brief outlining your project's purpose, scope, and inclusions helps manage expectations and avoids assumptions. Clarity is key; assumptions can lead to misunderstandings. These steps will simplify the process and bring you closer to a successful project.

Lesson 5. Trust Your Team.

Once you've assembled a skilled team with clear expectations and minimal assumptions, trust them. While renovation horror stories exist, there are also exceptional architects, contractors, and designers committed to excellence and ethical practices. Seek out these professionals, collaborate closely, and trust their expertise. Trusting your team's professional abilities is fundamental to a successful project.

What lessons have you learned on your renovation journey? Do you agree with my top five? Share your insights; I'm eager to hear your perspective.
