Narrow Kitchen Transformation with Bespoke Details

This kitchen design project transforms a relatively dark, cramped kitchen into an airy, free-flowing space with ample room for both the home chef and family socializing.

Located at the rear of a typical long, narrow home in Toronto’s Riverdale neighbourhood, this newly-expanded kitchen fulfils a simple, unified design vision with clean, bespoke finishes. Custom white millwork is enhanced with open wireframe shelves adding lightness as they attractively display tableware and cookbooks. Stainless steel built-in appliances integrate seamlessly into the cabinetry, keeping focus on food preparation while maintaining the kitchen’s clean lines.

Custom Open Shelves and Airy Design

As a primary goal, the clients sought to create a larger, more functional space which would satisfy the needs of all members of a busy urban family. The previous kitchen was expanded by the removal of an adjacent powder room, which was awkwardly small and used infrequently. Though the long, narrow envelop was limiting in the number of potential configurations, the layout was reconfigured in order to open up sufficient circulation space. This allows for two to three cooks, with zones for food preparation, baking and plating.

Lounge seating at the rear makes for a light-filled, comfortable area for children to gather at the end of the school day or for guests to relax and take in the action as dinner is prepared. An improved media centre and new rear doors further increases the functionality of this lounge, promoting it as an appealing family hub. The clean aesthetic and finishes of the kitchen upgrades are carried through on the main floor with a new expanded, glazed vestibule and redesigned fireplace.

Not only did this residential interior design project harmoniously achieve the clients’ objectives, but it also earned first place in the Sub-Zero and Wolf 2013-2014 Kitchen Design Contest for the Eastern Canada region.
