Unique Condo Transformation to Downsize

We don't often receive requests for condo projects, but when the homeowners shared their plans for this one, I knew it was a remarkable opportunity. They were transitioning from a house in Riverdale to a condo at Market Square, located across from St. Lawrence Market. This condo, mostly untouched since its construction in the early '80s, presented a blank canvas for potential transformations.

Working on condos comes with distinct challenges and limitations, so most of my design interventions were cosmetic in nature. However, I took advantage of the opportunity to strategically reconfigure the layout. The most notable changes occurred in the front entry, where partition walls were adjusted to enhance sightlines and expand the kitchen area. As you enter, a lowered ceiling section and darker tones create an intimate atmosphere leading to an artfully illuminated cove.

Bold Natural stones and Lighting Design

One of the primary challenges was upgrading the lighting, as the 8-foot concrete ceiling offered limited possibilities. To create a sense of height, I designed a light cove around the kitchen volume. Indirect lighting bouncing off the ceiling imparts an airy and bright ambiance to the space.

This renovated apartment will serve as the clients' home for years to come, and they were unafraid to make bold statements that reflect their life experiences and travels. The deep red in the kitchen and the use of lapis lazuli stone in the fireplace both express their desire to create a unique and impactful space. It was a pleasure to craft such an exceptional environment for them.
