Grenadier Road

Type: Private Residence – Toronto
Completed: 2018

When my clients bought this house, it had been with the same owner for 70 years and needed a full update,  there was nothing of significant value to retain and so the task of a full update began.  this is a stately home in the High Park neighborhood of Toronto, it has great presence and our focus was on the interior and a new rear addition.  Beauparlant was retained for architectural and interior design.

There were clear objectives along efficiency and mechanical updates, but also improve the house to make it liveable to today’s expectations and standards.

The exterior of the house is quite original; however, the interior was to be contemporary with warm colours and finishes.  The overall feel was to be inviting and perfect for hosting large groups in a casual environment.

On the main floor, the program was to create an open living space at the rear that combined the kitchen, dining room and family room.  Through several iterations, we decided to locate the new kitchen in the place of the former dining room with the family room closest the rear yard and large windows and door.

The kitchen occupies a large area and the goal was to visually integrate it with the dining and family room.  The material composition of wood, natural stone and solid colour blocks break up the volumes and helps reduce the visual mass of the cabinetry.  The upper cabinets combine the original dining room windows with storage, open display and lighting giving them the tailored appearance of a built-in wall unit instead of kitchen cabinets.   A butler’s pantry was incorporated to conceal all the daily items we don’t always want to have on show in an open plan space.   By introducing contrasting materials and separated lighting controls, the butler’s pantry can virtually disappear when not in use.

Lighting is used extensively to define the zones;  the room transforms depending on the different uses and time of day.  Every light source was considered, all lighting controls are dimmable and zoned to transform from bright workspace by day to soft and glowing lounge environment by night.
