Home Renovation: Modernization in a Historic Setting
This home renovation project takes place in the picturesque Cabbagetown neighborhood of Toronto, renowned for its vast expanse of Victorian housing, making it the largest continuous area of such homes in North America.
In the initial project planning phase, the homeowners contemplated whether to move to a new house or invest in renovating their 120-year-old residence. Recognizing the need for a substantial renovation to align their home with modern standards and meet their family's requirements, they chose to embark on an extensive whole-home renovation. The primary focus of this renovation revolved around the kitchen area, addressing fundamental needs for increased storage and functionality while navigating the challenges posed by narrow passageways and disjointed access to the rear yard.
Relocating Basement Stairs for Enhanced Functionality
An integral decision in our space planning involved relocating the basement stairs towards the rear of the house. This strategic move not only created a lower landing at grade level, seamlessly connecting with the yard but also gave rise to a striking 1 ½-story glass wall. Furthermore, this alteration offered additional storage space beneath the 2nd-floor stairs and widened the hallway to the kitchen, significantly enhancing the house's overall accessibility.
The comprehensive project encompassed enhancements to the entire residence, tackling structural and mechanical concerns while simultaneously optimizing spatial divisions, programming, and functionality. The 3rd floor underwent a reconfiguration, resulting in two bedrooms and an expanded attic space for a new bathroom. The basement was also underpinned and lowered to form a well-lit family room and guest bedroom.
Every decision pertaining to layout, materials, and finishes was meticulously chosen with the long-term satisfaction and enjoyment of the homeowners in mind. Our commitment was to transform this historic house into a contemporary, functional, and comfortable family home.
